Standing Committees

The Standing Committee on Economics develops policy recommendations and carries out projects related to the economics of psychiatry in support of provincial psychiatric associations. It deals with issues such as tariff/fee schedules, funding mechanisms, negotiation issues, the economics of psychiatric practice, and recruitment and retention incentives. It sponsors an annual workshop to develop the negotiation skills of individuals negotiating on behalf of their provincial psychiatric associations with their medical associations and/or governments.

The Standing Committee on Education provides advice on the education of psychiatric trainees and on educational matters of interest to the specialist practitioner and the public. It undertakes activities to encourage the advancement of the specialty and to ensure the highest quality in educational development and delivery of training. It liaises with a wide range of bodies involved in psychiatric training and accreditation including the Coordinators of Post Graduate Psychiatric Education and the Continuing Professional Development Committee. The CPA also has observer status on the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Specialty Committee on Psychiatry.

The Standing Committee on Professional Standards and Practice develops papers, guidelines and statements on issues relating to professional standards and practice. The Committee also conducts periodic reviews of current papers; receives and reviews issues raised by membership, the public and other interested groups. In addition the Committee collaborates with the Executive and Board to ensure liaison and coordination of activities with other committees, councils, provincial associations, public groups and government on issues relating to professional standards and practice.

The Scientific and Research Affairs Standing Committee recommends policies and guidelines to the Board on scientific and research aspects of psychiatric practice. The Committee acts as a source of information and advice to psychiatric, education, industrial and government organizations on scientific and research matters. In addition, it liaises with the research community and funding sources on matters related to research activities; promotes training in and the pursuit of mental illness research and conducts special studies and projects.

The Scientific and Research Standing Committee oversees The Practice Research Network (PRN) This serves as a practice research tool for the profession. Results from surveys conducted by the PRN provide insight into continuing professional education, policy, research, and clinical practice priorities and strategies for psychiatry.
