The Association of Chairs of Psychiatry in Canada (ACPC) award recognizes individuals who have made a significant and sustained contribution to education in psychiatry.
Recipients – ACPC Award for Excellence in Education
Criteria
This award is intended for individuals whose work has been widely recognized for at least three years. Nominees should have made a significant and sustained contribution to education in one or more categories:
- active teaching: lectures, small-group teaching, resident seminars, journal club, etc.
- clinical supervision of undergraduates and residents
- supervision of graduate students, postgraduate fellows, and other research students
- guidance or supervision of thesis students
- participation in community educational activities
- supervision of and participation in the examination processes of the nominee’s department, university or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
- development of new evaluation strategies and techniques
- course development and innovative teaching programs
- writing course notebooks, textbooks or teaching handbooks
- development of new pedagogy
- contribution to continuing medical education
- academic management of teaching programs at the hospital level through teaching, coordination of students and residents, or centralized specialty
- teaching
- publications of research on teaching strategies
- publications on education
Nomination Procedure
Only one candidate may be nominated by each department of psychiatry. Only academic departments in good standing with ACPC may make submissions. Re-entries are considered when supported by the required documentation.
The submitted nominations should include:
- letter of nomination;
- letters of support from colleagues and program coordinators;
- evaluations by the Department or Faculty;
- student evaluations;
- testimonials from former students;
- invited lectures;
- peer-reviewed articles; and
- curriculum vitae.
One electronic copy of the complete application must be submitted to the Chairperson of ACPC/ADDPC by May 1 of each year.

The ACPC Annual Research Award recognizes high quality research by a resident.
Recipients – ACPC Annual Research Award
Criteria
- high quality research by a resident that shows evidence of innovative thinking; and
- the research must be carried out during the individual’s residency training in an accredited Canadian program, but may be submitted for consideration up to two years after completion of the training.
Nomination Procedure
Only one candidate may be nominated by each department of psychiatry. Only academic departments in good standing with ACPC may make submissions. Re-entries will be considered when supported by the required documentation.
Submissions for the award must include:
- a letter of nomination;
- adequate proof of the value and quality of the work that has been done;
- peer-reviewed publications (or in press) with the applicant as head author; and
- a curriculum vitae.
One electronic copy of the complete application must be submitted to the Chairperson of ACPC/ADDPC by May 1 of each year.

The Annual Award for Creative Professional Activity highlights the importance of creative professional activity in Canadian Departments of Psychiatry by rewarding exceptional contributions.
Recipients – Annual Award for Creative Professional Activity
Criteria
This award is intended for any faculty member whose primary appointment is in a university department of psychiatry in Canada, and whose professional work has been widely recognized over a period of at least three years. Nominees should have made a significant contribution in one or more of the following categories:
Discovery, Innovation and Creativity
The candidate developed an original creation, including an invention, a new technique, a piece of visual art, an educational program, a musical work, literature or poetry, film, dance, theatre, architecture, or other original work pertinent to mental health.Contributions to the Development of Professional Practices in Mental Health
The candidate demonstrated leadership above and beyond holding office or membership in the profession, professional organizations, government or regulatory agencies, that has influenced standards and/or enhanced the effectiveness of the discipline.Examples are:
- Guideline development
- Health policy development
- Government policy
- Community development
- International health and development
- Consensus conference statements
- Regulatory committees
- Setting of standards
Exemplary Professional Psychiatric Practice
The candidate’s practice is recognized as exemplary by peers and has been emulated or otherwise had an impact on practice.Creative professional activity in education can include:
- Instructional innovation/creative excellence: teaching techniques, educational innovations, curriculum development, course planning, evaluation development.
- Leadership in the development of professional practice in health professional education.

The Coordinators of Undergraduate Psychiatric Education (COUPE) Best Paper Award for Medical Students is designed to recognize a student in undergraduate medical training who demonstrates an enhanced level of understanding and interest in mental health. Furthermore, this prize is intended to reward a student who takes the time and effort to investigate a specific issue relevant to mental health, either within psychiatry or another area of medicine. Finally, this prize is intended to reward the student who best demonstrates an advanced level of scholarship expected at the senior stages of undergraduate medical education.
Recipients – COUPE Best Paper Award for Medical Students
Criteria
Nominees:
- must be full-time undergraduate students enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine Program at any of the 17 medical schools across Canada; and
- the author of the paper should be an individual student, not a group.
Submissions:
- cannot have been previously published or be currently under consideration for publication;
- must be an academic discussion of ANY topic within the realm of mental health OR another area of medicine relating to mental health (i.e. post-MI depression, postpartum psychosis, etc.);
- the topic chosen does NOT have to be drawn from a direct experience. It can address ANY AREA WITHIN MEDICINE, AS LONG AS IT RELATES TO MENTAL HEALTH;
- can be in any one of a variety of forms (i.e. essay, review article, original research, argument etc.);
- must have all references appropriately documented and all pages numbered;
- not exceed 2000 words in length.
- tables/figures (max. 3 in total) will be allowed in addition to the 2000 word limit; and
- must include a cover page will be provided with title, author’s name, word count (without figures), number of pages, date of submission, email address, mailing address and telephone number.

PURPOSE:
The Canadian Organization of Undergraduate Psychiatric Educators (COUPE) is proud to announce the
creation of our first COUPE Early Educator Award. This award is designed to recognize a teacher who is
actively involved in undergraduate medical education, and demonstrates enthusiasm, creativity and
innovation to inspire learners in psychiatry. Please see attached information for further information on
eligibility criteria and deadlines for applications award.ELIGIBILITY
Candidate should demonstrate innovation in and/or dedication to undergraduate medical education in
one or more of the following areas:- curriculum development,
- teaching effectiveness,
- mentorship,
- promotion of psychiatry,
- leadership,
- educational scholarship,
- dedication to undergraduate teaching,
- commitment to educational excellence/professional development.
Favorable consideration will be given to candidates who demonstrate innovation and excellence in
undergraduate education particularly at provincial and national levels. Receipt of local and/or
departmental award(s) will also be viewed favorably.REQUIREMENTS:
Application package cannot be more than 10 (ten) pages excluding cv.
A maximum of one applicant per Canadian university. Prior unsuccessful nominees can re-apply.
Applicant must be within 10 years of practice at an academic institution, at assistant
professor/clinical assistant professor or lower.SUBMISSION PACKAGES MUST INCLUDE:
1. A personal statement from the applicant (not more than 2 pages; 12 point arial font) outlining the
relevant highlights of their academic activities and involvement in education that is the focus of the
award topic.
2. Nomination letter from someone in a leadership position (Departmental Chair or designate, or
undergraduate leadership position).
3. 2 letters of reference (1 can be from a medical student if appropriate).
4. An up-to-date CV.DEADLINE:
Deadline to submit application is June 30, 2023 to the applicant’s COUPE representative.PRIZE:
The award recipient will receive a certificate of recognition from COUPE and the letter will be cc’d to the
Chair of the Department and to the Dean of Undergraduate education of the recipient’s
Department/University. The award recipient will receive a certificate at the COUPE annual meeting held
in conjunction with the CPA meeting typically in September of each year. COUPE will notify the recipient
in advance in order that he/she may attend and take a picture with the COUPE Chair.EVALUATION:
COUPE will nominate a sub-committee to review application packages to select a winner. In the case of
a deadlock, the sub-committee may bring forth application packages to the COUPE Committee for a final
decision. The sub-committee reserves the prerogative to not give an award in a given year.
The COUPE representative from each school will be responsible for assessing their schools’ respective
submissions and will forward the best application to the COUPE Executive for adjudication by June, 2023. -
This award recognizes the best paper on a continuing medical education theme by a resident who is currently enrolled in a Canadian postgraduate training program in psychiatry and is sponsored by the Council of Psychiatric Continuing Education (COPCE).
Recipients – COPCE Best Paper Award by a Psychiatry Resident
Eligibility
- All residents currently enrolled in a postgraduate training program in psychiatry at a Canadian medical school.
- The author of the paper should be an individual resident. Papers by multiple authors/group submissions will not be accepted.
- The submission cannot have been previously published or be currently under consideration for publication.
Criteria
- The submission will be an academic discussion of ANY topic related to continuing medical education and psychiatry.
- All references must be appropriately documented.
- Pages must be numbered.
- Submissions must be between 1,500 and 2,000 words in length.
- A cover page must be included, stating: title, author’s name, word count (excluding figures), number of pages, date of submission, email address, mailing address and telephone number.
Nominations must be received by February 1 of each year.
