Purpose
This award is presented annually to an outstanding psychiatry resident in alignment with the Canadian Psychiatric Association’s (CPA) mission to promote and recognize excellence among its membership.
Award Criteria
Applicants must have demonstrated exemplary dedication, commitment, and leadership in one or more of the
following domains: advocacy, research, or education.
Applicants must also demonstrate involvement with CPA through having done one or more of the following:
● Attended a CPA annual conference or other CPA educational activity, or
● Presented at a CPA annual conference, or
● Submitted an abstract to the current year’s CPA annual conference, or
● Participated in CPA’s Junior Investigator Research Colloquium.Terms of Reference – Member-in-Training Award of Excellence

Applicants must be current members in good standing of the CPA (subject to validation by CPA) and be enrolled in an approved postgraduate training program in psychiatry at a Canadian university. Each psychiatry residency program may support one candidate per year. We recommend that residents interested in applying for this award notify their program director in writing by December 1. Programs where multiple residents express interest will need to conduct an internal process to select one resident to support.
Application Process
Applicants must submit their application through the CPA website by the annual deadline and include:
● A description of how they have demonstrated exemplary dedication, commitment, and leadership in one or more of the following domains during their residency years: advocacy, research, or education. (350 words maximum).
● A description of how they hope to progress their career in the next five years (250 words maximum).
● An up-to-date CV (three pages maximum).
● A one-page letter of support from a mentor. The mentor does not have to be a CPA member.
● A letter from their program director that attests to the applicant’s good standing in the residency program by including all the following components:
– Confirmation that the applicant embodies the spirit of the award,
– Confirmation that the applicant embodies the values of CPA, including promoting the highest quality of care and treatment for persons with mental illness, and advocating for the profession, and for their colleagues,
– The applicant’s contributions during residency in the domains of research, education, or advocacy,
– Confirmation that the applicant has not engaged in poor role modeling, bullying, racial or sexual microaggressions, or harassing behaviour of any kind,
– Full disclosure of any lapses of professionalism, including remediation that has since occurred.Review and Adjudication
Award applications will be reviewed to ensure they are eligible, complete, and relevant. Applications will be reviewed by a peer review panel including a minimum of two CPA members from relevant CPA committees such as the Members-in-training Subcommittee, the Early Career Psychiatrists working group, the Research and/or the Education committees. The review panel members will be determined on an annual basis based on the pool of applications received. Reviewers will score applicants using a standardized framework. A short-list of applicants will then be presented to the Membership Affairs Committee (MAC) for a final online review and grading, followed by in camera discussion and final selection.
The MAC shall notify the Board of Directors of its decision. The committee has the option to not confer the award in a given year.
The CPA will notify the recipient in advance of the annual conference in order that they may attend.Recognition and Benefits
The recipient will receive a suitably inscribed plaque in recognition of the accomplishment to be presented during the annual conference. The CPA will maintain an official record of recipients online and at head office.
In addition, structured mentorship will also be offered to the resident by a more experienced member of the CPA in line with the applicant’s career goals and interests.

Recipients – Early Career Achievement in Psychiatry Award
Eligibility
Nominees must be members in good standing of the CPA, and be in the first five years of practice following first certification in psychiatry.
Nomination Process
Nominations must be received electronically by the annual deadline and include:
• A nomination letter (500 words maximum) and two letters of support that illustrate or describe the nominee’s contribution to the field of psychiatry. The nomination letter and at least one of the letters of support must be from a CPA member in good standing.
• An up-to-date copy of the nominee’s CV (maximum 10 pages).Review and Adjudication
The Membership Affairs Committee shall choose the recipient by consensus from among the nominations, and notify the Board of Directors of its decision. Adjudication shall take place in camera, and the committee has the option to not confer the award in a given year.
The CPA will notify the recipient in advance of the annual conference in order that he or she may attend.
Recognition
The recipient will receive a suitably inscribed plaque in recognition of the accomplishment to be presented during the annual conference. The CPA will maintain an official record of recipients online and at head office.

This award is presented annually to an outstanding early career psychiatrist who has excelled in the area of research.
Award Criteria
Nominees must demonstrate leadership in and dedication to research through high-quality research contributions in psychiatry with potential for clinical impact. Rankings will be based on the originality, volume and quality (e.g., methodology, impact factor of the journal, importance of the result) of research contributions.
Nominees must also demonstrate involvement with CPA through having either:
• Presented at a CPA annual conference, or
• Submitted an abstract to the current year’s conference, or
• Participated in CPA’s Junior Investigator Research Colloquium, or
• Been published in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry.
Recipients – Early Career Psychiatrist Research Award
Eligibility
The nominee must be: 1) a member in good standing of the CPA, 2) in the first five years of practice following first certification in psychiatry, and 3) in the first five years of holding their first academic appointment.
Nomination Process
Nominations must be received electronically by the annual deadline and include:
• A letter from the applicant describing their research accomplishments (500 words maximum).
• Two nomination letters (500 words maximum), one from each of two nominators. One of the nominators must be a CPA member in good standing.
• An up-to-date copy of the nominee’s CV (10-page maximum).Review and Adjudication
The Research Committee and the Membership Affairs Committee (MAC) shall choose the recipient by consensus from among the nominations. Adjudication shall take place in camera, and the MAC will then notify the Board of Directors of the decision. The MAC has the option to not confer the award in a given year.

Purpose
This award is dedicated to the memory of Dr. John Cleghorn, an early neuroendocrine researcher and the first Chair of the Research Committee (orginally known as the Scientific Council). This award recognizes a CPA member for excellence in clinical psychiatric research or leadership in advancing clinical psychiatric research in Canada.
Award Criteria
The award is meant to recognize outstanding psychiatrist-researchers who have demonstrated excellence in clinical psychiatric research, or have shown leadership in advancing psychiatric research.
Recipients – J.M. Cleghorn Award for Excellence and Leadership in Clinical Research
Eligibility
Nominees must be members in good standing of the CPA. Current members of the Research Committee are ineligible for consideration.
The nominee must:
- have achieved excellence in psychiatric research; and
- have demonstrated leadership in advancing psychiatric research.
Nomination Process
Nominations must be received electronically by the annual deadline and include:
- a statement by the nominator (500 words maximum) concerning the nominee’s contribution to clinical psychiatric research; and
- A curriculum vitae for the nominee that does not exceed five pages.
- Three manuscripts that capture the accomplishments of the nominee.

The Research Committee shall choose the recipient by consensus from among the nominations, and notify the Board of Directors of its decision. Adjudication shall take place in camera, and the committee has the option to not confer the award in a given year. The CPA will notify the recipient in advance of the annual conference in order that he or she may attend.

Dedicated to the memory of Dr. CA Roberts, this award is presented annually to a psychiatrist-clinician who has made a significant contribution to the improvement of patient care.
Award Criteria
The award is meant to recognize outstanding clinicians who have been instrumental in the development of new treatment approaches, creative program design or administrative innovations, or who have been recognized as consistently providing superior quality psychiatric care to patients.
Recipients – C.A. Roberts Award for Clinical Leadership
Eligibility
Nominees must be members in good standing of the CPA and must be:
- a clinician who has been instrumental in developing new treatment approaches, creative program design or administrative innovations; or who has been recognized for consistently providing superior quality psychiatric care to patients
Nomination Process
Nominations must be received electronically by the annual deadline and include:
- A statement by the nominator (500 words maximum) concerning the nominee’s contribution to improving psychiatric care.
- Supporting documentation illustrating or describing the nature of the nominee’s contribution. This documentation must not exceed 10 written pages.
Review & Adjudication
The Professional Standards and Practice Committee shall choose the recipient by consensus from among the nominations, and notify the Board of Directors of its decision. Adjudication shall take place in camera, and the committee has the option to not confer the award in a given year. The CPA will notify the recipient in advance of the annual conference in order that he or she may attend.
Recognition
The recipient will receive a suitably inscribed plaque in recognition of the accomplishment to be presented during the annual conference. The CPA will maintain an official record of recipients online and at head office.

This award is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Paul Patterson, who was a child and adolescent subspecialist with a strong interest in the education of the general psychiatrist. He was a mentor who practiced community-based care and was an early advocate of reciprocal education and practice at the family medicine-psychiatry interface. Dr. Patterson led and contributed to a broad range of CPA educational initiatives with wisdom, creativity and a warm, gentle sense of humour.
This award is presented annually to a psychiatric educator who, in responding to change or leading in new directions, makes a significant innovative contribution to undergraduate, postgraduate, continuing professional, or public education.

Recipients – Paul Patterson Innovation in Education Leadership AwardCriteria
The nominee must:
- have made an innovative contribution that arises in response to specific educational issues, or creative leadership in new educational directions, such as system changes, curriculum developments, evaluation procedures and public education approaches (national, provincial or regional); and
- be a CPA member in good standing.
Nomination Procedure
The nomination must include:
- a statement by the nominator (500 words maximum) concerning the innovative merit and educational impact of the nominee’s contribution;
- supporting documentation illustrating or describing the nominee’s contribution. Supporting documentation is not to exceed 10 written pages. Video or audio support must be no longer than 10 minutes in total duration. It is strongly encouraged that supporting documentation include an educational dossier if available.
Deadline for receipt of nominations is Feb. 1.
Adjudication
The Education Committee shall choose the recipient by consensus from among the nominations.
Note: This award is not to conflict with the Association of Chairs of Psychiatry of Canada (ACPC) Award for Excellence in Education given annually to an individual who has made a significant and sustained contribution to psychiatric education or the Joint CPA-Council of Psychiatric Continuing COPCE Awards given annually to an individual or group to recognize the most outstanding continuing education activity in psychiatry in Canada.
