COURSE OVERVIEW

This course offers an interdisciplinary clinical focus which is applicable to all community practitioners. The vision of the conference is to examine Bipolar and Major Depressive Disorder from a psychiatric and psychological perspective. The conference is designed to provide strong practical and clinical resources to all members of the mental health community.


KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Kevin P. Hill, M.D., M.H.S., is an addiction psychiatrist, Director of the Division of Addiction Psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He graduated from Skidmore College and Jefferson Medical College before training in psychiatry at the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Training Program. Dr. Hill earned a Masters in Health Sciences from the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at Yale and also completed the Partners Healthcare Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program.

Dr. Hill is committed to bridging the gap between science and public perception about marijuana and is frequently called upon for his expert opinion on medical marijuana and its legalization. He is known for his book Marijuana: The Unbiased Truth about the World’s Most Popular Weed (Hazelden, March 2015).

Dr. Valerie Taylor is the current head of the Department of Psychiatry at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary and served as the Psychiatrist-in-chief and medical director of mental health for the Women’s College Hospital at the University of Toronto. Valerie completed her medical degree and a bachelor of science in medical science at Memorial University of Newfoundland and her psychiatry residency at McMaster University. While at McMaster, she also obtained a PhD in neuroscience, completed the Clinical Investigator Training Program and finished a postdoctoral fellowship in mood disorders research.

Valerie has held funding from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Stanley Research Institute and the federal and Ontario governments. She has published more than 120 peer-reviewed studies and has written a cognitive behavioural therapy manual on weight management.


COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of this course, learners will be equipped to:

  • Better manage bipolar and major depressive disorder
  • Identify local advances and resources in the management of bipolar and major depressive disorder
  • Clarify fact vs fiction in the treatment of mood and its co-morbidities
