À la conclusion de cette activité, les participants seront en mesure de : 1) Recognize biomedical factors that indicate the need for hospitalization; 2) Explain common dialectical-behaviour therapy skills that can be taught to and used by people who have been hospitalized for medical stabilization; and 3) Describe an approach to sequencing treatment for people with comorbid trauma and eating disorders.
Eating disorders are common, yet psychiatrists receive little training in their diagnosis or management. The pandemic has brought a marked increase in the numbers of people presenting to the ER with eating disorders. General adult psychiatrists are increasingly asked to provide consultation and supportive management to severely ill people with eating disorders who present to the ER or are admitted to general internal medicine for medical stabilization. This course will prepare adult psychiatrists to be more effective for these people by providing current best practices for managing this challenging population.
This course will include « must knows » that can be immediately applied in the clinical setting. Topics that will be covered include the following: factors that indicate the need for hospitalization; setting the context for effectively managing ED patients; when medical admission is indicated; how to support ED patients admitted to medicine for medical stabilization; how to feed ED patients on medical wards; practical dialectical-behaviour therapy strategies for ED patients on medical wards; and when post-traumatic stress disorder and ED co-exist.
