À la conclusion de cette activité, les participants seront en mesure de : 1) Define psychodynamic group psychotherapy; 2) Consider the therapeutic opportunities available in psychodynamic group psychotherapy; and 3) Reflect on opportunities for resident supervision in psychodynamic group psychotherapy.

In this workshop, we will review the goals, theory, and characteristics of psychodynamic psychotherapy. We will outline the similarities and differences in psychodynamic psychotherapy as practised in individual and group settings and note the increased therapeutic opportunities available in groups. We will discuss the therapeutic opportunities in psychodynamic group psychotherapy, illustrated with brief clinical examples drawn from the presenters’ practices. We will also consider the potential for learning and supervision of residents when they observe or participate as therapists in psychodynamic groups. We will conclude the workshop by listening to an audio-recording of a recent psychodynamic group therapy session and reflect together on the therapeutic opportunities, as they appear in this real example of a psychodynamic group.
