KP01 - Virtual Mental Health Care: Current and Future Practice
Friday, 23 October
10:00 – 11:00 (1 hr)
Allison Crawford, MD, PhD, FRCPC; Matthew Chow, MD, FRCPC; Lori Wozney, PhD
At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1) Describe best-practices in virtual mental health care; 2) Consider aspects of clinical care that build a virtual therapeutic relationship (i.e., what make good clinical care in a virtual environment?); and 3) Balance compassionate clinical care with compassionate self-care.
We will take a practical approach to virtual mental health care, with a focus on providing clinical care via televideo. We take a broad perspective, considering technology, administrative, and clinical dimensions of virtual care, providing both a grounding in current evidence and best-practices, and also share our ‘tips and tricks.’ While we acknowledge the recent rapid shift to virtual care in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, we want to move beyond providing bare access to care, and look at how we can provide person-centered quality of virtual care.
Topics to be discussed include: 1) Brief overview of the evidence for virtual mental health care; 2) Implementing virtual care into your practice; 3) Administration and billing 4) Safe virtual care; 5) The virtual therapeutic relationship; 6) Quality of virtual care – quality outcomes, improvement, and evaluation; 7) Virtual care in our health system – models of care, integration, health equity; and 8) Digital compassion and self-care.
