Fellow of the Canadian Psychiatric Association

The designation of Fellow of the Canadian Psychiatric Association (FCPA) honours psychiatrists for demonstrated allegiance to their profession and commitment to the ongoing work of their association. It rewards members who have made significant contributions in concentrated areas of achievement, enhancing the excellence of their specialty. Candidates may apply for the Fellowship after a minimum of five consecutive years as Active Members in good standing and must show involvement in the CPA by having achieved one of the following:

  • Attended at least three of the last five annual conferences; or
  • Served on a CPA Committee or on the Board for at least one year; or
  • Presented at a CPA annual conference or CPA-led CPD event.

Applications must be accompanied by endorsement signatures from two Active Members in good standing.

Criteria

Fellowship candidates must excel in three or more of the following areas:

  • Involvement in territorial, provincial, national or international medical or psychiatric associations.
  • Activity in other national or international organizations concerned with mental health and mental illness issues.
  • Volunteer community or humanitarian work locally, national or internationally.
  • Significant clinical contributions to psychiatry.
  • Administrative psychiatry.
  • Teaching in any setting.
  • Documented scholarly or research activity.

At a minimum, Fellowship applicants must achieve a score of 3/5 in at elast three categories or at least 2/5 in every category.

Application Procedure

Candidates may apply directly for Fellowship after a minimum of five consecutive years as Active Members in good standing.

Applications must include:

  • A curriculum vitae.
  • Signatures of endorsement from two Active Members in good standing who have been members for five years or longer.
  • An application form completed and signed by the candidate.

Deadline for receipt of nominations is February 1st of each year.

Adjudication

The Membership Affairs Committee will submit its recommendations for fellowship status to the CPA Board of Directors for confirmation.

Submission Deadline

The application form and all supporting documentation must be submitted no later than midnight, February 1 of each year.

Successful candidates will be honoured at the CPA Annual Conference. The designation FCPA may be used by Fellows for as long as they are Active Members in good standing.
